A comprehensive and insightful biography, Cary Grant: A Brilliant Disguise by Scott Eyman is a must-read for those interested in the Golden Age of Hollywood. I read his biography about John Wayne in 2022. I was mesmerized by how Eyman paints a brilliant portrait of his subject and the past, the film business, and the evolution of American culture that John Wayne and Cary Grant had to contend with as their careers advanced.
Like the Wayne book, this one doesn’t hold back on information that might change a reader’s perspective on the subject. It’s an unflinching look at the real person behind the façade: their intimate hopes, dreams, fears, issues, and insecurities.
Along the way, we get to know Cary Grant – formerly known as Archie Leach – as a human being and not just an image forever captured on film until the end of time.
I enjoyed Cary Grant: A Brilliant Disguise and will definitely be reading more of Eyman’s biographies in the future.
